Port Covington
In mid-2002, the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, opened its first Baltimore City store at Port Covington on the South Baltimore peninsula, just south of Locust Point. Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club were the first retailers to locate in the new (in ’02) Port Covington Shopping Center, a 60-acre waterfront site on East Cromwell Street. Several hundred City jobs were created when the 142,000 square foot Wal-Mart and the 130,000 square foot Sam’s Club opened their doors. This strategically-located retail development at the site of a former City rail yard had come a long way – has stumbled along the way, and has a long way yet to go. The Sam’s Club has closed and is now vacant, which is definitely not a good sign.
Now there are plans underway (aren’t there always?) to bring about a renaissance to this section of the South Baltimore Peninsula, Port Covington. But some people are actually working on those “plans” and are moving forward to bring Port Covington into the limelight, and being a productive part of the Baltimore economy for the Twenty-First Century. The Port Covington Maritime Center, already a reality, contains a boat and yacht repair service, Tidewater Yacht Service Center, and a currently-being-developed first-class marina complex, Winans Cove Marina.
In addition to commercial development we will soon – two years or so?) see much activity in residential real estate development. Beautiful new townhomes will be built, expanding the availbility of first-class waterfront and water-view homes on Baltimore’s Southside.
Port Covington Maritime Center
On the “South Side” of Baltimore’s well known Locust Point and Fort McHenry area, this “forgotten” piece of waterfront has begun “upscale” during the past couple of years. On the southern shore of the South Baltimore peninsula, the Port Covington Maritime Center is quickly becoming known as one of the premiere boat and yacht service facilities in the state of Maryland and on the Chesapeake Bay.
This modern renaissance jewel of Port Covington contains the “new” Tidewater Yacht Service Center, with its decades-long fine reputation as the finest boat and yacht repair service in the Baltimore area, and a developing first-class marina complex - Winans Cove Marina. TYSC has been well-known by area boaters for nearly two decades and Winans Cove is fast becoming one of the sought-after places to dock their boats.
